Mom's Mini Cup Match Horror

With son Jaquari, 11

Popular radio personality PowerGirl Trina comically explains the horror in her household when her 11 year-old son Jaquari revealed he's supporting a Cup Match team different from mom and dad's.

Getting the news that my son was chosen to play in Mini Cup Match was a moment of pride for me until I had to face every Bermudian parent’s worse nightmare: he was playing on the WRONG TEAM.

For the second year in a row the Mini Cup Match selection committee placed my son Jaquari on the St. George's team.  For some reason I think someone on the committee either doesn’t like me or is trying to punish me for being a Somerset fan.

“I am gonna call and get you switched over to Somerset,” I told him, “They are not gonna force my son into playing for the wrong team!”

“But mommy,” he said, then paused looking at me with his big puppy dog eyes, “I want to play for St. George's.  That's my team!”

My mouth dropped.  I was speechless.

Was this the baby I raised for 11 years... carried for nine months… uttering such words to me?!!  My husband and I are devout Somerset fans.  How did this happen?  Where did we go wrong?  I couldn’t figure this out.  Was he joking?

Then he looked me in the eyes and said, “And I would like you and daddy to wear my team’s colours at the game!”

What? Was he serious?  The nerve of this child!  Doesn’t he realize that I only wear red and blue?

After much deliberation, my husband and I made the hard decision to wear blue and blue in support of our son.  It hurt so bad.  I was sick to my stomach!  The blue and blue colours burned my skin.  The things I do in support of my son!  OH DE AGONY!!!!

Somerset I love you.  But I love my son more!

Jaquari played a great game! However, due to us wearing blue and blue the St. George's team lost and Somerset was victorious for the first time in years.  So maybe I need to wear blue and blue on Cup Match.  What do you think?
